Some Popular Types of Wood used in Furniture Making

Wood selection for use in a piece of furniture is critical because each specie has its own structural, mechanical and visual characteristics.  Additionally, aspects of the visual characteristics will be accented or muted, depending on the characteristics of additional species used in the piece.  For example, mahogany trim on a primarily oak piece will tend to accent the oak's grain more than if the entire piece were made of oak.  This is because the more subtle visual characteristics of mahogany grain will contrast with oak's typically bolder grain and tend to accent it.
An important consideration in choosing a type of wood is, of course, what the wood will be used for.  Pine, for example, is not the best choice for children's furniture, or anything which is likely to see rough usage.  When choosing a type of wood, visual appeal, structural properties such as its hardness, and cost are all major factors to be considered.  While visual appeal and cost are subjective, a woods hardness is a quantifiable value, and has been standardized by what is known as the Janka (pronounced YAHN-kah) Test Scale.  To view a fairly comprehensive Janka Test Scale, click here.
